What is the purpose of a timing belt or cambelt?
The purpose of a timing belt or cambelt is to ensure that the moving components of your car’s engine revolve in perfect coordination. It is a key component of the engine, ensuring that the camshafts and the crankshaft move in sync - effectively it keeps your engine going. Not all manufacturers use timing belts though, with some opting for timing chains instead.
A timing belt is made of rubber and revolves at 1000s of revolutions per minute, withstanding extreme mechanical and thermal stresses. So it’s lifetime is limited, and replacement of the belts and tensioners at the scheduled intervals is essential maintenance to avoid belt failure and damage to your engine.
When is it time to replace the timing belt?
Typical signs of a timing belt failing include a ticking noise coming from the engine, this sound is common as the timing belt beginning to wear out. Other signs include the engine failing to turn over or misfiring, and you may find oil leaking from the front of your car. If you notice any of these signs you should speak to a mechanic as soon as possible.
Every manufacturer will have different guidelines for when your cambelt should be replaced. For most Fiat, Abarth and Alfa Romeo vehicles a cambelt replacement is required every five years, or 72,000 miles - whichever comes first.
